My Hungarian Roots -Beautiful Synagogues but no Jews
|
I have just returned from a very moving and emotional trip to Hungary, from where my Mother's family hails. To think there were 2000 synagogues there, with vibrant and diverse communities that built the most beautiful and impressive synagogues, that stood so proudly in the centers of cities. Clearly with the belief that the communities would go on for eternity.
The leaders in all fields of sciences, business and the arts were Jews. They believed so tragically falsely they were safe. But almost three quarters of the Jews were murdered. Today we can tour beautiful synagogues without any people.
What I am constantly amazed at is the contrast of the extraordinary beauty and the harrowing brutality.
The exquisite beauty of the Synagogues has inspired me. I see it as a mission to incorporate this art into my work and products.
Jewish communities are arising particularly in Budapest.
Jews are slowly admitting to their roots, and institutions are growing.
Perhaps the story of Hannukah is being retold at a different time and place.
My Mother's family was from Budapest, I visited her home, the location of their printing factory as well as my grandfather's grave. And again I felt so grateful to live in Israel. With sons in our army.
